Blogs That Promote the Full Method

Wednesday, February 13, 2013 / 1 Comment
While I am certainly not a purist in the great realm of Montessorians, I do appreciate the full method.  I firmly believe that to reap the greatest benefit, it is important to immerse oneself in the details and to plan your journey mindfully.  The Internet has given the Montessori Method momentum and a forum for sharing ideas.  At the same time, I fear it has muddled the message a bit.  While the materials are wonderful, it is such a small piece of the puzzle.  Given my goal to embrace the full method in as much detail as is feasible for us, I have sought out like-minded bloggers.

Here are a few blogs that I highly recommend.

Enjoy!  And feel free to share any similar blogs that I have missed.

Khan Academy

I recently stumbled across a great online education resource.  The Kahn Academy is a free online resource that strives to bring a world-class education to anyone, anywhere.  It provides over 3000 in depth videos on key concepts, especially those concerning science and math.  It also provides numerous online "challenges" and can track the progress of each student.

I'm impressed with the detail and range of topics available.  While most of these are too advanced for my young audience, I have already enjoyed brushing up on a few concepts myself.  I do plan to show a few of the astronomy videos this fall as we explore the topic.  We will probably explore some of the art history videos as well.  Being a bit of a math junkie I found the Doodling in Math videos enjoyable.

If you find something exceptionally interesting here, please let me know!

Loving Little Boys

Wednesday, March 7, 2012 / No Comments
My sweet little William is growing up as well as growing into full toddler hood.  One of my favorite qualities about him is his intense passion for life.  Of course, sometimes this translates into some interesting moments.  These are a few of the posts I've stumbled upon in the last week that I've found helpful.

1 - I adore the toddler calm down ideas from Little Hearts Books.  The calm-me bottles are brilliant and they are on my project short list.  We have already cleared out an area on the main floor for our own comfort corner as well.  I found a tent tutorial from Cakies.  I'll post pictures once I have ours setup.

2 - Beautiful Sun Montessori posted a great technique for helping resolve conflict.  While I'm not sure that my little guy will fully understand it yet, we plan to implement this immediately.  I think the simple act of lovingly touching both children will go a long way to removing the tension.

3 - The post "I Let My Child Say No" at Blogher gave me some food for thought.  I've been trying to be more of "Yes" mom.  I see the next step as letting my child tell me no.  For some reason, hearing no from my child causes an immediate gut reaction.  This article reminded me that my children have their own wills.  Most of the time their "no" just means they don't want to do something, not that they want to defy me.

4 - And of course for the moments where you need to tell your child no, How We Montessori has a great post on how to say "No" the Montessori way.

5 -I want to end with a lovely little post by Team Studer called  25 Rule for Mothers of Sons.

I hope you enjoy them as well.  If you have any related articles, please share in the comments!

My Favorite Printable Sites

Wednesday, February 22, 2012 / No Comments
As my 8th (since I started counting) box of laminating sheets showed up on my doorstep via Amazon I realized that I have made a lot of cards and other classroom materials.  Below you will find a list of my favorite printable resources.  This is in no way a comprehensive list.  It seems like I find new sources every week.  I am also only including those sites that have a good number of downloads.

If you are looking for a specific file, I highly recommend conducting a detailed Google search such as "astronomy nomenclature cards" or  "parts of a tree 3 part cards".  You'll be amazed at what is available for free.

Montessori Print Shop  Offers both free and for pay downloads.  This is generally my first stop.

Montessori For Everyone  Another fantastic shop that offers both free and for pay downloads.

The Helpful Garden  Lots of high-quality, free printables including the pink and blue reading series.

Montessori Mom  Plenty of files to download plus many links to other resources sites.

Montessori Materials  A material sharing site.  There is a ton here in every subject.

Montessori Material Share Yahoo Group  Another material sharing site. You must join the Yahoo group to gain access to the files.

ETC Press  Offers a few for pay and free downloads.

Counting Coconuts  Provides a number of free, unique materials.

Beautiful Sun Montessori  Downloads can be found on the menu on the right side.

Liveable Learning  Provides a number of free materials.  Must join as a paid lifetime member to gain access to all files.

United Montessori Association  Provides some useful files but you must sign up as a member, which is free.

What sites do you use for your Montessori printed materials, free or for pay?
